We first met in person in 1999, on the other side of the world. It was at the Crossing Border festival in Den Haag in The Netherlands.
Karl and I were staying with one of the organisers from VPRO radio, and so we were there early to help set up for the live recordings they were doing. I guess we did ours first, and I remember we were so clumsy and nervous... wanting to replay takes of songs that we weren't happy with. Then you walked in for your session and just played so naturally and seemingly effortlessly. One take all the way through, and it was incredible.
For me as a very young musician at the time it was a masterclass in what it meant to record a live studio performance. I had never witnessed anything like it before, or since if I'm honest.
I hope I turn up a roll of film from back then. I guess the recording must exist on cassette tape somewhere. What a treasure that would be!
If you're ever back in Baraboo, the Alpine Cafe is a great place to eat, as much for the surroundings and people-watching as the food.
Love that you are an image maker, as well! 120! 👍🏼

Love you and love your work Buck!
Hey there, buddy!
I’ve got a VPRO sticker on an old case from that visit.
Hi to Karl, too! We still talk about the Brooklyn rendezvous with you two a few years later.
Crazy.
